Jos M.M. Hermens

Jos is a sportsmen in heart and soul. He started as a long distance runner and ran the Olympic final of the 10.000m in Montreal 1976. In the same year he became World Record holder for the 1 hour race. Before Jos reached his full potential as a runner, he got injured at the age of 27 and had to stop his career. Between 1978 and 1985 he worked for Nike Europe as Marketing and Promotion Manager. In the meantime, he did his coaching degree and started to coach athletes and gave running/athletics clinics all over the world (China, the Americas, Europe, Africa). In 1985, he founded Global Sports Communication, one of the leading and most professional international athletic sports agencies. He won two times the award for best athletic manager of the world.

Jos is involved in many major international athletic events. In 1980, he founded the Rotterdam Marathon with a small group of people and since 1995 he is in the board of directors of the Amsterdam Marathon (both world leading marathons). Furthermore he is closely involved with another five shorter road races and is adviser to many more world class road races and track meetings.

Jos organises the biggest athletics event in China, the Shanghai Diamond League, with Chinese partners. He managed to reach within 5 years the highest category of 14 track meets in the world (the Samsung Diamond League) with this meeting in Shanghai. In the Netherlands he and his company organise the FBK Games in Hengelo, part of the World Challenge Meetings.

GSC manages also more than 150 international athletes from 20 different countries. Especially on the marathon and roadraces , Jos is responsible for an excellent group of athletes with for instance Marathon World Record holder Haile Gebrselassie (Ethiopia), world champion marathon Abel Kirui (Kenya), Tsegaye Kebede (Ethiopia, bronze medallist in Beijing Olympics and World Championship Berlin 2009), Robert Cheruiyot (Kenya, winner of the Boston Marathon 2010) and many more. Also Kenenisa Bekele (double Olympic and multiple World Champion 5000m and 10.000m and World Record Holder) and Liu Xiang (China, Olympic Champion and double World Champion and two World Records in 110m Hurdles) are under his management.

Jos' philosophy is to maximize the marketing and promotion of athletics by professionalizing the synergy between athletes, partners, organisers, media, federations, coaches and everybody else involved in the beautiful world of sport.
